gathering the Dallas dance community

Our Mission

We nurture a dynamic dance ecosystem in Dallas by bridging gaps, connecting communities, and empowering dance artists to flourish.

our story

Agora Artists was founded in 2017 by Dallas native Avery-Jai Andrews after experiencing first-hand a critical gap in her hometown’s dance ecosystem: limited infrastructure for independent, working dance artists to build sustainable careers here. What began as a personal initiative quickly expanded into a larger mission – cultivating an artist-first community grounded in connection, equity, and meaningful creative practice.

In 2020, the organization transitioned from its original identity, Don’t Ask Why, into Agora Artists – a shift that marked not just a name change, but the solidification of a mission centered on building a supportive, interconnected dance ecosystem. Since then, Agora has grown into a vital hub for dancers seeking community, growth, and long-term artistic development. Rooted in the belief that dance is both a personal and communal act, Agora fosters environments where process is prioritized, artistry is valued, and collaboration is core to the creative experience.

Through its flagship program, SEEDS, Agora has created an equitable, low-barrier entry point for choreographers and performers. SEEDS provides tangible support—rehearsal space, production resources, mentorship, and creative guidance—at no cost to artists, empowering sustainable careers and broadening access to high-quality dance-making and professional development. The program’s success in cultivating local talent led to the launch of Dallas Indie Dance Fest in 2025, expanding opportunities for artists to share new work and deepen their artistic practice.

Agora’s programming champions diversity and inclusion, amplifying underrepresented voices and nurturing connections across disciplines and geographic regions. Its highly anticipated one-day festival, Mini Movement Fest, bridges the gap between artist and audience, creating a space of gathering, connection, and exchange. Additional initiatives serve as creative laboratories where dialogue, discovery, and innovation flourish, offering crucial platforms for artists who are often less resourced or supported.

Today, Agora Artists exemplifies a people-first model of cultural leadership. The organization continues to reimagine what a thriving dance ecosystem can look like—one built on reciprocity, care, and collective purpose. From nurturing emerging talent to catalyzing systemic change, Agora Artists is not just shaping the future of dance in Dallas—it is reshaping what’s possible.
