Choreo Lab
June 21st | 11:00am-2:00pm | Arts Mission Oak Cliff
Choreo Lab is an experiment in short-term, low-stakes creative processes that mutually benefit dancers and dancemakers. Led by a new choreographer each month, we’ll create instant ensembles, giving the choreographer an opportunity to test out creative ideas on bodies other than their own and dancers the opportunity to meet collaborators, learn new movement styles, and be in a process-oriented environment. Dancemakers might ask participants to create their own material, play with spacing/facing, and engage with other compositional elements.
Each session will start with a 15-30 min warm up depending on the needs of the process. Before each session participants will receive more details about what to expect including notes on apparel and other elements that might be involved like writing, speaking, and/or physical contact. Since every person will bring and receive extraordinary value to the space, we will ask for a donation from everyone participating each month–both dancers and choreographers.
A sliding scale of $10-30/person for each month will help cover the cost of studio space and admin while cultivating mutual respect and commitment between the performers and choreographer.
Choreographers for May, June, and July are already confirmed, and we hope to continue labs long-term in the future with rolling submissions from choreographers.
Choreo Lab was conceived by Lauren Kravitz with considerable support from Rai Barnard. Together, we'll facilitate and develop this series.
Schedule:
All sessions are held at Arts Mission Oak Cliff (410 S Windomere Ave Dallas, TX 75208)
May 17 & 31 11 AM - 2 PM w/ Rai Barnard
Experimenting with contemporary partnering and phrase work inspired by childhood playfulness and pillow forts. Expect to mess around with props and floorwork while exploring forces of resistance/support between bodies. Mix of learning set material and creating through collaborative improvisation.
June 7 & 21 11 AM - 2 PM w/ Lauren Kravitz
Playing around with modern and jazz material inspired by Judy Sheppard Missett’s Jazzercise franchise along with other aerobics influences and reflections on growing up as a competitive dancer. You can expect repetitive, athletic movement, lots of play with time and patterns–we’re gonna sweat! Hoping to have a large group.
July 5 & 19 1 PM - 4 PM w/ TBD
More info coming soon!
Registration: $10-30, sliding scale for all participants, including choreographers. Registration for a lab includes two 3-hr sessions within one calendar month, and participants are expected to attend both.

STech workshop w/ slowdanger
Oct 26 | 10:30am-12:30pm | Oak Cliff Cultural Center
slowdanger’s STech is a movement workshop focused on exploring contemporary and postmodern techniques through a creative and performative lens. We will work with physical rigor as a motor to unfold the possibility of our body’s intuitive intelligence through a combination of phrase material, groove, floor work, mobility/stability exercises and textural improvisational modalities. Participants will sweat, inflate, collapse, take up space and connect to pleasure, effort and each other. Dancers will be challenged to view their technical foundations as a support system for further risk taking and expansion. STech asks participants to use their technique as a grounding mechanism to further character development, physical efficiency, qualitative filters, world building and more. This class is a research based class and allows space for taking time to discover pathways and question how it can evolve and change for each unique mover.
Tickets: $10*
